The 108 Sun salutation is best known as a beautiful spiritual practice that often people will use to celebrate the arrival of the equinox, change of seasons.Technically this tradition can be practice any given day but there’s something special that happens when you offer it to yourself during big events of life especially when you want to create new goals, intentions or offering a re-connection to your mind and body when feeling un-grounded.
Why is 108 so significant in the yoga world?
A lot of different school of thought come into play but here are some fun facts as to why 108 is a scared number:
1. In numerology, if you would add up 108, 9 would be it’s total and in numerology,this represents the symbol of universal love, eternity and awakening.
2. In Ayurveda, there are 108 sacred points on the body.
3. In astronomy, the distance between the Sun and Earth is around 108 times the Sun’s diameter.
4. Mala bead necklaces have 108 beads, which are used to count during meditation.
If we bring it back to a more physiological understanding, the constant flow of the sun salutation during the 108 ceremony brings the body to build its inner fire which helps the body to cleanse its self. A detox effect comes into effect both mentally and physically as the body moves in and out of the sun salutation,helping the body to move stagnant energy, stuck emotions arises and clear out from our muscles, nervous system, breath, organs.
During this event you’re invited to do as many flows as you can, if you hit 108 sun salutation amazing but If you do less it really doesn’t matter, the presence that you bring to your practice, the intention setting behind your flow and movement is what actually truly counts. There’s a sense of surrender to the process, to the flow of these sun salutation where there will be emotions and body sensations arising and as you surrender into them, there’s a sense of freedom, lightness and an a better understanding as to why this is an ancient ritual.
This ceremony we will start by creating an intention thought meditation and breath.We invite you to bring an object that represents something important to you, it can be a picture, lucky charm, mala, something that reminds you of a person, a dream/goal, a cause anything that will inspire you during your practice. You will be guided by Ariane and Andrea, offering you modifications to your flows and assistance if you would like to receive them as you move. To close off the ceremony we will do a little get together with snacks and a circle to share your experience or just to chat.
